New fic: Busted.

Not sure if I want to post this anywhere else but here, as it's basically something I planned to go further with and never got around to. Better posted here than gathering dust in a corner. Besides I love this little thing, so I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

Title: Busted
Series: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Pairings: Garak+Bashir
Part: 1/1
Rating: PG-13 I think. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Warnings: This is something I planned on making into a much much longer fic, but I decided that it could stand alone until I decide where I want to go with it. Might be some unanswered questions in here, but hey, Garak loves those.
Beta: The lovely [livejournal.com profile] prelocandkanar  offered lots of great opinions on this and is the reason my grammar didn't require correcting this time around. :o)
Feedback: Yes please.
Disclaimer: I don't own any cranky Cardassians or darling Doctors. Or even the concepts thereof. *sigh* Not mine. At all. Oh I only wish.
Summary: Post series glimpse into a future where Garak and Bashir are having a secret relationship and Garak adopted a teen girl after his return to Cardassia.

“I said no, Nirra.”

Garak's voice was calm, but his eyes betrayed his anger slowly rising within him.

“But, Father...”

“Nirra! I will not tolerate any more of this disrespect! You are only fifteen and I will not let you run off and join the military! You have a brilliant mind, and I refuse to see it wasted on brutal combat!”

Nirra was quiet but scowled openly at Garak. He sighed and smoothed his hair back with a weary hand.

“I'm sorry it has to be like this, but you are a child. And as long as you are in my care, you will stay in school. That's my final decision.”

Angry tears welled up in Nirra's eyes as she whirled around and ran up the stairs to her room. Half way up he caught her angry hiss:

“You are not my father...”

Garak sighed heavily again, feeling very old and mumbling to himself;

“No, child, you were the one who wanted to call me that.”

Sitting down at his desk he prepared to look over some files for his meeting the next day, when a small chirp announced an incoming message on the viewer. When the smiling face of Julian Bashir appeared on the screen, Garak could not stop a very relieved smile at seeing the face of his beloved after such a long time.

“Hello, Elim.”

“Hello, Julian, my dear. You have no idea how glad I am to see you.”

Julian's eyes bored into his with the familiar urgency they always displayed when they had not met for far too long.

“I think I have a pretty good idea. We're in orbit around Cardassia for a day and I'm coming down to the planet for a while. I have eight hours at my leisure. Can we meet?”

The time had long since passed when there was time for the playful dance they used to employ and Garak was frankly too relieved to see Julian again to even bother with the slightest attempt at obfuscation as had been his habit earlier. It had been far too long this time.

“Yes. Give me an hour.”

Julian's smile was balm on Garak's raw nerves and it was all he could do not to shower Julian with declarations of love over a rather unsafe line. Visiting a Cardassian once suspected of spying on the Federation was one thing. Sleeping with him was quite another.

Garak swiftly made his way to Nirra's room and put on his best face of remorse. He certainly still had the ability to deceive when there was need for it. And great gul, was there ever need now. After a quick knock he let himself in as always. Nirra was on her bed reading, refusing to react to his presence. So she expected him to make the first move. Fair enough. That was the plan after all.

“I didn't mean to treat you so harshly.”

She stirred but didn't look at him.

“Are you here to tell me you've changed your mind?”

“No.”

“Then I would kindly ask you to leave my room.”

He let himself display his frustration in a heavy sigh, which made her look at him.

“I want you to know that I do this with your very best interests at heart and I would not have you think me cruel.”

She frowned and looked back to her book.

“I don't see how you can avoid that.”

He put on a paternal smile, meant to soften her heart to her old, adoptive parent.

“What if I told you that you can spend the night at Zioni's and accompany her to school tomorrow?”

As expected, Nirra's eyes widened at the prospect of this treat.

“But you said I couldn't on a school night?”

He shrugged and fiddled with some clutter on her desk.

“I suppose an exception every once in a while won't hurt.”

He almost fell over when he was hit by the impact of a thrilled teenage girl throwing herself in his arms.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

He returned her hug sincerely, feeling one of those all too rare surges of true affection for his charge. As she hurried around the room packing things he made sure to resume his role as stiff guardian.

“I'll call Zioni's parents and arrange it. But I will be checking your work when you come home from school tomorrow. I won't have you whiling the whole night away!”

He had no doubt that her homework would be shabby at best the next day, but considering the night of pleasure in store for them both respectively, he considered it a very small price to pay indeed.

Within the hour Nirra was happily on her way to her friend's house, no more than ten minutes away, but well out of the house. The remaining minutes before Julian arrived were spent in agonizing impatience. Finally there was a knock on the door. Garak all but ran to open it and immediately pulled Julian inside. The door was only just closed behind him when they were closely entwined, making sure to prove just how much they had missed each other. Between kisses and caresses Julian made his usual comments on the arrangement.

“I hate this...God how I hate it...”

“I completely agree, my love.”

“I wish I could stay... I wish... I wish...”

“No more talking.”

Somehow they made it upstairs to the bedroom and for the next few hours all was bliss.

<<<<<<<<<<<<

Nirra quietly let herself in. She knew Garak wouldn't want to be disturbed in his study while he worked, so she went upstairs to her room with light footfalls. She would just fetch the book she forgot and then leave again before Garak had time to reconsider his sudden generosity.

Half way up the stairs she froze at the muffled sound of an unfamiliar voice. Someone was in Garak's bedroom! Before she could consider the possibility of an intruder, Garak's smooth tenor joined the foreign sounding cadence of the other person. She listened for a few minutes to the quiet voices shifting and finally concluded that nothing dangerous was going on. Garak apparently took advantage of her absence to entertain a guest of his own.

But... how often did he entertain guests in his bedroom? A dozen different explanations whirled around in Nirra's mind, but none seemed to make any particular sense. Garak had so few acquaintances and in the three years she had now spent living under his roof, he had not once had a friend to visit. A few official visits from the orphanage she came from, some business contacts and associates. But no real social calls.

And just when she thought it couldn't get any more unreal, she heard Garak laugh. A gentle laugh, broken here and there by a word or a pause. First of all, Garak very rarely laughed. Secondly, he never laughed like... that! So relaxed and soft. The other voice chirped in here and there, apparently also very at ease with the situation, judging by the teasing tone of the comments she could only just hear being made.

Without thinking, she let her feet carry her silently further up the stairs, until she was standing against the wall right next to the door. It was slightly ajar, but from her angle she couldn't see anything. However, she could now hear the words spoken.

“...you say that every time and we never get around to it!”

Again that gentle laugh.

“I know, my dear, but if I keep saying it, then one day we might actually make it.”

An answering chuckle sounded.

“Right. I'll starve to death before your raging desires are sated enough for you to take me to lunch”

A rustle of fabric made Nirra's heavily ridged brow furrow sharply. Was Garak... in bed with someone?!

“Well you can hardly blame me, doctor. You've only become more desirable over the years.”

Another rustle and the unfamiliar voice dropped to a sultry murmur.

“So you 'do' like my beard then?”

Garak's voice dropped to a similar and completely alien tone of husky whispering.

“I confess. Yes I do.”

Nirra felt like her brain had blacked out thoroughly in the face of so many unfathomable occurrences in her otherwise numbingly dull routine of a life. Hearing no more talking, only the occasional rustle, she moved slowly and silently to the other side of the door to look through the gap. What she saw yet again tilted everything she ever assumed about her guardian.

Yes, he was in bed with someone. A man. A 'Human' man. On top of that, her fanatically meticulous foster father had apparently let a hurricane take a turn about his bedroom. His otherwise neat bed was a chaos of twisted sheets and pillows dropped to the floor. His hair was a mess and the lamp on his bedside table had tipped over. Thankfully the pair were at least covered by a blanket, because judging by the amount of clothes around them, they were obviously both very naked.

And if that wasn't strange enough, their behaviour was even more unreal to her. Hugging the Human tightly to him, Garak was rubbing his cheek against the heavily furred one of his lover with obvious delight, while hands were lovingly stroking backs, shoulders and arms. Nirra's very limited knowledge of intimate relationships certainly bore no resemblance to this, but there was no doubt, even in her shocked mind, that she was watching two very happy people. The Human smiled so broadly it looked like his face would split in two and Garak himself looked like he had put on a completely new face all together.

And then the two smiles met in a searing kiss. A kiss unlike any she could ever recall seeing shared even between the most fervent lovers she had met. It was obviously another one of those things one did only in private with a lover. A kiss that was playful and light, yet at the same time so passionate and comfortable that she was suddenly in no doubt that this was no new thing. This had been going on for a long time. The familiarity in their movements told her all she could ever have asked.

Feeling suddenly embarrassed at catching her secretive guardian in such a revaling position, she slowly backed away from the door, hoping to slip away unnoticed. Unfortunately, she was unaware of the enhanced senses of Garak's visitor and just as she slipped out of their line of vision, she heard the Human voice:

“Garak... we're busted.”

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Hearing the door to Nirra's room slam shut made it all too clear to the lovers that she had seen way too much to cover up their actions in any way.

“Damn...”

Garak's quiet exclamation only made Julian hug him closer and stroke his ruffled hair. His voice was calm and soothing to Garak's yet again frayed nerves.

“Don't worry, my love. We knew it would happen sometime.”

Garak sent his lover a crooked smile.

“I don't know about you, doctor, but I never expected she would catch us more or less in the act!”

Julian laughed quietly while Garak slid out of bed and slipped on his thick, ankle long robe.

“I suppose there's no way around it. I shall have to talk to her.”

Just before he left the room, Julian's soft voice stilled him.

“Garak?”

“Yes, my dear?”

“Don't be too harsh on her. She's young and probably pretty shocked right now. Give her a little time to think things through.”

Garak gave his beloved Human a lingering look and finally nodded before taking the few steps down the hall to Nirra's room. He took a deep calming breath before he knocked and let himself in.

Nirra was on her bed yet again, this time sitting with her hands clasped firmly in her lap, her eyes fixed on the carpet and her posture rigid. Garak pulled her desk chair close and sat down opposite her. He took her hand, hoping to convey that he was not really upset with her, but she trembled and her eyes closed.

“Nirra, look at me. Please.”

She took a few shuddering breaths before she dared lift her eyes to his. She relaxed somewhat when she found they were calm and earnest – not blazing with anger as she had feared.

“I'm so sorry you walked in on us like that. I never meant for you to find out like this.”

Nirra swallowed and her eyes bored into his.

“Did you ever mean for me to find out?”

Garak's eyes flashed with emotion for a split second, but then his calm look returned.

“Yes. I meant to tell you. Some day. When I believed you would be ready to understand. I imagine it must be rather shocking to you.”

She huffed and averted her eyes.

“Of all the people you could sleep with it had to be a... a Human!“

Garak's eyes widened and he barked out a little laugh that made her look at him with a puzzled stare.

“What?”

“Oh, I'm simply surprised that his race upset you more than his gender...”

To his intense surprise Nirra smiled and rolled her eyes.

“Oh please, I've lived with you long enough to notice you don't exactly have any preferences. You flirt with everybody!”

“I most certainly do not!”

She giggled at his miffed response.

“You do! You even flirted with that social worker at the orphanage the day we met, just to give us a few more minutes to talk before he made you leave!”

Garak was momentarily stunned at how developed her perception skills were even before he had begun training her, but he decided not to let on too much.

“What made you think I flirted with him?”

She blushed and looked the carpet again.

“The way you looked at him. And you touched his arm. In an... intimate way. I couldn't hear what you said to him, but I'm sure it was very flattering. He blushed and smiled at you.”

Hearing her detailed memory from several years ago, Garak simply could not help but congratulate himself for picking out the most forward child of them all in that run down orphanage. And he had to admit that he was feeling very proud of her for how she was handling the situation.

“Well you are right in your assumption. I did flirt with him. Quite outrageously in fact.”

Another small giggle escaped her before she met his eyes again.

“He's with the Federation isn't he?”

The quick return to the subject did not faze Garak, but his face did turn more serious. This could be where the conversation turned tricky.

“Yes.”

Her eyes flared.

“Then how can you be with him? You showed me yourself how the Federation promised all kinds of help after the war but delivered none of it! How we are considered traitors for joining the dominion back then. How they loathe us.”

He squeezed her hand and sighed.

“Understand this, Nirra. Doctor Julian Bashir is not the Federation, nor is he representative of his entire race. He is one person, shaped by his past just as we all are. And for the record, he doesn't approve of the Federation's attitude to Cardassia either.”

She pouted for a second and then turned her eyes upward again.

“A Human... of all the races in the universe... a Human.”

Garak quickly smothered his smile before speaking again.

“Yes, I know. But I'm sure you will like him. Especially because he's absolutely nothing like me.”

Her eyes were serious when they flickered back down to his.

“I do like you. I didn't at first, but I do now.”

She put one of her hands over his and returned the pressure.

“That's why I asked if I could call you Father.”

Again Garak smiled. This was indeed turning out to be an extraordinary day. He collected himself before he got too carried away with emotion though and simply covered their joined hands with his own.

“I'm sorry, my dear, but I must ask you not to mention this to anyone. I wish it could be different, but Julian is risking a lot to be with me and I trust you can keep a secret. At least I have taught you that.”

Nirra looked like she was about to argue, but in the end she merely sighed.

“Can I at least tell Zioni that I'm upset because I caught you in an intimate situation?”

Garak's eyes widened and he couldn't help but chuckle. The logic was sound. Of course her closest friend would notice something was off so some kind of explanation would probably be necessary.

“By all means, tell her that it was a male half my age, if you like. Feel free to abuse me wildly for seducing a poor young man into my bed with my wicked ways.”

>>>>>>>>>>>

Nirra's ringing laughter reached the ears of Federation Doctor Julian Bashir in the next room, just as he was zipping his uniform closed. He smiled at the sound and released a breath he had been holding since he had spotted those blue eyes in the gap of the door. It seemed things were not so much a disaster as he had feared.

Within minutes Garak appeared again in his bedroom, this time closing the door securely behind him before turning to his guest. At the sight of the uniform he frowned and crossed his arms over his chest.

“I don't recall telling you to get dressed, my dear.”

Julian pursed his lips and frowned right back.

“You promised me lunch, remember? And since we're out of bed I thought I might as well take advantage of it. Besides, I wouldn't want to embarrass your charge by appearing naked when you introduce me.”

Garak advanced on his guest, a smile slowly widening on his face.

“You were still in bed when I left and that's where I expected to find you on my return. We are not finished yet.”

The Human lowered his eyes and stepped in as close as possible to his lover without actually touching.

“Oh no, indeed we are not. But... consider how much more... energetic I could later be if you allow me a little lunch break.”

The Cardassian leaned in and breathed hot air over the sensitive Human ear, making its owner shiver.

“I'll be holding you to that, doctor. No falling asleep on me this time around.”

Hearing his lover sigh sweetly at the words, Garak smiled and pulled back with his best smile.

“Well then. Why don't you head downstairs and introduce yourself, while I slip into something a little more dignified?”

A sudden glimpse of nervousness on Julian's face only made Garak smile even more.

“You're not coming with me?”

Turning away and picking out something fresh to wear from his vast closet he pretended to ignore the note of apprehension in the doctor's voice.

“Oh come now, doctor. She's a fifteen year old girl. I'm sure she won't bite.”

To his surprise Garak suddenly felt warm hands circle his waist from behind and slip beneath the edge of his robe while a soft voice purred in his ear.

“Are you sure? She's your adoptive daughter after all... and I happen to know that you 'do' bite.”

With that final note, Bashir grazed his teeth lightly over the neckridge of his lover, before pulling away and leaving the room. Garak took a long moment to compose himself before returning to his clothes. While dressing himself, he considered what to treat his good doctor with for lunch. It would have to be something very nutritious to lay a good base for the rest of their time together. Because he had every intention of making full use of it.

End. For now.

OMG, I love! I totally buy Garak being a foster father of sorts, and poor Nirra! As someone who had the misfortune to catch her parents in the act more than once *shudder* I can understand her shock!

And this:

She huffed and averted her eyes.

“Of all the people you could sleep with it had to be a... a Human!“

I chuckled right along with Garak! Surely she will discover Julian is no ordinary Human! But her outrage about his being Human was awesome. And sadly, I could see the Federation promising the moon and delivering on none of it if it didn't think helping Cardassia rebuild was worth its while.

Delicious work, as usual! I love that Garak can be paternal and a sex god all at once!

Hehe, glad you like. It's growing like mad, right now.
