Totally late review-ish thing about Merlin 2X9, Lady of the Lake.
Ok, I'm totally late. I tried to write my usual blow-by-blow review, but frankly, I've been freakishly busy lately, so when I finally have a moment online, I usually choose to just phase out and read smutty Merlin fanfic. Ahem. Anywho...
So instead, I'm just gonna bring up a few key points that got me thinking. Better get to it, before the next episode...
Merlin and his apparently severe brain defect.
I'm starting to believe Uther's theory about the mental affliction. I mean, seriously. It seems the writers are determined to write Merlin dumber and dumber by every episode! I get that he's in love/besotted or whatever with Freya and wants to show off. But to throw caution completely to the wind is just so incredibly idiotic that Arthur has my vote right now. Just look at the scene where Merlin blasts the cage door open. Sure, he checks the street briefly, but it's a street. With houses. With windows. Lots and lots of windows. And alleys. And shadows that he himself takes advantage of seconds later. And the gargoyle nearly squashing Arthur and the whole destiny thing in one swift stroke. And don't even get me started on the stealing stuff scenes! Gosh. It seems that they needed comic relief, but obviously at the cost of Merlin's brain. I am not a happy fangirl over this. Ok, so the kink-fodder was a bonus. But still not happy.Just pervy.
Gaius and his moment of asshole.
I'm starting to expect every episode to have at least one moment of Gaius being incredibly insensitive/stubborn/cowardly/closed off/uninformative or otherwise being an asshole. Mostly with Merlin, but also seen with Morgana and others I can't name right now. I love Gaius, but it's like he always gets to be the meanie, despite being one of the few people who might have a little understanding for what Merlin goes through. It's always: "Don't get involved." "Don't be stupid." "Don't do what's right, because you might get punished." And my personal favorite: "Go do that thing I've been telling you all episode NOT to." I'm sure the writers mean for him to be the voice of reason in Merlin's life, but they just fail at it far too often for my liking. Which is sad, because Gaius is a really cool character.
The fangirl fodder.
Ok, so... am I the only one getting more and more convinced that those writers are reading a little too much fanfic?! The bath sequence, the dress stealing, the flowers from earlier episode... I swear, I've read all those fics in one form or another. Not to mention the famous going back to Arthur sleeping bare chested. *sigh* This episode was just so stuffed with kinks, I don't even know where to begin. Towel!Arthur, Wet!Merlin, Sleepy!Arthur, Dress!Merlin, Noogie!Arthur, Captured!Merlin rescued by Protective!Arthur, Gentleman!Merlin and BATH!ARTHUR!!!! And it just goes on and on and on. *fans self*
