So, last night we went to the movies to see Watchmen. I'd already heard some rather harsh reviews so I was prepared for a possible crap movie wrapped up in awesome special effects. But surprise! I actually liked it!

Gonna put this next bit under a cut, so people who don't want spoilers can avoid it.

First of all. Yes, the effects were awesome. I have to give them that. And since I do love special effects, this already made the movie worth seeing in my view. I confess, I 'do' see why some people complain. There was LOTS of gory moments and rather uhm... detailed sex scenes, which might not have been completely necessary. But all in all I thought that was a minor thing vastly overshaded by awesomeness. :oD
I never really read the comics. I remember flipping through them when I was still too young to really understand them, but that's it. So I will not be comparing them here. Hubby thought it was nicely done and with lots of respect for the look of the comics. So I'll take his word for it.
Rorschach is totally my favorite! He is just made of awesome! Insane, yes. But awesome!
Close second is Nite Owl. He's so... normal really! And sweet and dorky and sensitive. I just can't help but love him!
And I think this must be a result of spending too much time in the slash genre of fiction, but damn, I felt my slashy sense tingle a LOT when those two guys were in the same frame.
I heard a lot of people complain that the movie had a weak ass plot or that the effects had pushed the story aside. I couldn't disagree more. Granted, you had to stay on your toes to keep up with the plot, but it all came together beautifully in the end, if you managed to keep up through the movie!
It's like the film noir, superheroes, personal drama and murder mystery genres have been rolled into one delicious package, with the occasional hilarious moment.
There 'was' a rather disturbing likeness to Sin City in the way the story was told, but Watchmen is much more realistic and down to earth. Not to mention colorful! And kudos to the makers of the movie for letting Dr. Manhatten be naked. I almost fell off my chair when I realized they wouldn't be using 'creative filming' or clevery arranged sets to disguise the fact that he was naked, but it became a detail so fast, because it's just a part of who he is. Frankly, it almost became distracting when he wore those underpants thingies. But I guess a 30 foot penis would be too much for most people. ;o)
Another thing that made me (And my hubby, which was a little scary) practically squee with joy, was the music! So much of the music I remembered from my early childhood and it made the whole thing awesomely real, despite the 'adjustments' made to the period to essentially create a new universe. But since it's so close to the real 80's, you can't help but feel completely at home.
Other goodies:
Relatively unknown actors. Very refreshing!
Getting to see the people under the masks, before you really see the heroes. You come to love the characters before you even know what they can do!
Female superhero with actual woman shapes! This girl has thighs, hips and awesomely enough NOT tits 5 sizes too big.
Disney reference! Archie. I love that ship! You just cannot go wrong with something that can go under water, in the air and has a flame thrower and machine guns!

All in all I loved the movie! I give it 8/10, despite the gore and porn.
