Tuesday Movie Rec: The Shadow.
Why is it cool?
- It's like reading a comic book, only better!
- Despite the almost charicature-like characters, it never really gets cheesy!
- Really awesome actors in it! Surprising for a relatively low key movie.
- Brilliant sets!
- Wonderful music.
- Decent plot.
- Fun!
Favorite characters:
- Claymore. It's Tim Curry. 'Nuff said.
- Khan. He's just so epically villain-y. With the master plan, the monologues and the epic death scene! EPIC is his middle name!
- Moe. I always love good sidekicks and he is certainly one of the better!
Best moments:
- The Cobalt Club.
- Claymore and Margo in the hallway.
- The rescue of Roy Tam.
- Khan and Lamont in the lair.
- The final battle.
Me and the movie:
I fell asleep to this movie every night for several months when I was a teenager. I don't even remember where or when I first got it. Must have been sometime around when I got my first VCR. I vaguely remember seeing posters for it and wondering if it was worth watching. Clearly, I must have thought so. And I still do.
Also, knowing my love for this movie, a friend of mine used Margo's image for a character I played in a Vampire RPG he was hosting. :oD
Epic quotes:
Claymore: "Margo. You don't return my calls anymore."
Margo: "Well, that's not true. I never did return your calls!"
Claymore: "I know... and I can't imagine why..."
Margo: "It's because... I. Don't. Like you."
Dr. Lane: "Have you had your dinner?"
Margo: "... Yes, Dad, it's 2 AM."
Lamont: "You will forget about me."
Margo: "Why would I do that?"
Lamont: "Uncle Wainwright, are you sure you're not dead?"
Wainwright: "You know, Lamont, how is it possible that a man like you, who has absolutely nothing to do, manages to be late for every single engagement?"
Lamont: "Practise, Uncle Wainwright. Lots and lots of practise."
*Moe and Margo waiting for ages in the rain.*
Moe: "You know what I love about this job? The excitement..."
Why watch it?
This movie balances on a knife edge between epic and cheesy. Opinions vary, but I think it never truly ventures into cheesy-land. It hints at it, but does it smoothly and with style. If I could live anywhere, anytime, it would be this universe. It's a super-hero movie, but not the kind we see today. The pace is slower and the style is elegant. If you like old style comic books, black and white plots and a universe that doesn't take itself too seriously, then this is the movie for you. Also, it has a delightful whiff of steampunk and the few effects in it are simple and blend in perfectly! And it's just plain fun!
