Into the jungle...

Of baby-stuff!!! *shudder*
Mum in law said the moment we revealed that a baby was on the way, that she wanted to give us a babycarriage. The only condition was, that she be allowed to come along when we picked it out. I should have suspected then that there was a hidden agenda there.
First of all, we're always low on money, so the odds of us getting a babycarriage on our own was practically zip. So of course we agreed, and accepted any terms mum in law set down. She asked us to look into different models and get an idea of what we would like. So we did. Since we're currently living in a rather small apartment and our only mode of transportation is the bus, we wanted something that would be not too huge and easy to fold or something. We looked into what I thought would be reasonable, considering what kind of money we usually have available. The way I'm raised, I would never ever suggest something pricey when I'm given basically free reign.
When mum in law saw our suggestions, she dismissed them right away and threw out a number that made me choke. Jeeeeeeeezuz christ on a bike. That many zeros makes me dizzy. Now, I know the point is that it's supposed to be an investment, since we'll be using it for all our children probably. but daaaaaaymn. I simply had no idea she would be willing to throw that kind of money at us. So after a few days of going cross-eyes over all the options out there, I just kinda settled for letting mum in law go wild. And oh my lord... today was to be the day.
I tell you... I had simply no idea just how baby-crazy my mother in law really is! Thank god I had both my hubby and dad in law with us, or I think I would have gone bonkers. We went to this baby store... I can't begin to describe what was there, exept the fact that the sheer size and contents of the place would have been enough for a huge anxiety attack. If not for hubby... phew. The section of baby carriages alone was... gigantic! Eeeek! My ideas of what we wanted were dismissed in an instant. I was only grumpy about it for a few minutes, because I was prepared that we knew absolutely dick about anything baby-equipment-related, and because I never argue with the one holding the money.
A friendly (of course) salesman quickly scoped us out and charmed mum in law to buy the top top top brand of them all. He went on for a good 30 mins about how this one was superior to all the others. Frankly, my only concern was how we would get around with it on busses and such. He then proceeded to dismantle the thing and about 5 secs later, it would fit inside a suitcase. Good enough for me! Business completed, mum in law went to the register to set up delivery and such... and I thought we were done. But oooh no.
She then proceeded to ask us what kind of bed linen we had for the baby, what kind of (danish word I can't translate here) bed-padding-thingy we had, what kind of... so on and so on. I literally had to shout at one point to let her know that we DID actually have some of the things she wanted to buy. She went waaaaaaaaay over the budget she had set and by the shrugging of dad in law, I can only assume this has happened before. He was certainly not surprised. So we left with... LOADS of stuff. Eeeek. When we were finally home and alone again, I deflated completely, and I'm blessing my lucky stars that we don't have to do this again. At least not anytime soon.
I have to say though, that mum in law DID apologize for going crazy like that. Apparently she makes this offer to all her children when they deliver their first grandchild, but as it turns out, the last time she did, they wouldn't let her along to choose. They just ordered a huge and expensive model, and simply sent her the check. She wasn't very pleased. She probably would have gone along with anything they wanted, if only she could have been along to pick it out. So she admitted that she probably took out some of her frustrations over that incident when we were out there today, and she apologized, hoping we weren't too stressed out. Again, I never argue with the person holding the cash, so I assured her that we were very happy with all the stuff, gave them a cup of coffee and sent them home.
But damn. I can't deny that is was stressful as hell. I'll need a few days to recover.
BUT! I do like the babycarriage we ended up with, so here are a few pictures!
This is the make and color we chose:
And here it is (in a different color) somewhat folded. Although, it could actually go a lot smaller than that. Wheels come off with a push of a button and everything is really simple to take apart and put back together. That's what sold it for me.
