Ok, I sat down and watched it, simply because I'm home alone a lot these days and Pea's sleeping patterns are not conductive to fic writing. But a movie can always buffer while I'm taking care of him and I was getting more and more sure I didn't even want to pay for renting this movie.

And I'm glad I didn't. I completely failed in trying to ignore the previous Trek canon, so as a result I was massively disappointed.

Under the cut will be a LOOOOOOOONG blow-by-blow account of my reactions during the movie and below that, there will be a summed up good/bad list. So... onwards!

Blow-by-blow:

Nero's got fat ears...
Lots of weird aliens on that Federation ship. Didn't the Federation start out with just Humans and Vulcans? And... was it Andorians? Bottom line, all the Starfleet aliens are too much for me. Cool, but too much.
Birthing scene wildly overdone. Too cheesy. Weepy music pissing me off. It's emotion porn.
And also... they have star ships, but they can't tell if she's having a boy or a girl? I do enjoy George's reaction to his father's name, though. Hehe. Leave it to the mother to give the kid the ridiculous name anyway...
The theme is WAY too much Star Wars for my liking. I miss the old theme. Or just a hint of it.
Cheesy Nokia product placement. Fail.
LOL! Hover cop. He makes me think of Judge Dread. Especially with his: "Citizen!"
Ok, that slow mo stunt over the edge was just a little... too much.
Oh and also... kiddie Jim is a brat.
Is that... Vulcan? With those black holes and kids reciting whole dictionaries? Ok, that's a whole new level of weird.
Kid Spock is... uhm... wrong. I think it's the lisp that gets me.
Those Vulcan kids are just plain mean. And I find that very... un-Vulcan. But maybe it's just me. Could also be the weird pits that makes them so evil.
Quinto carries himself as Spock brilliantly, though. :o) First real treat.
But woah his mother looks way too young to be his mother.
Oooh, the council people calling Spock's human side a disadvantage. They're gonna pay. And I'm sure they find his joining starfleet a pretty harsh price to pay.
Hehe. He makes "live long and prosper" sound like an insult. Not quite like Nimoy would do it, but still believable.
Even more weird aliens in the bar. I'm still not liking it.
Adult Kirk is a bastard. Not much has changed.
This Uhura is more... uhm... sharp than the old one. Badmouthing in a way that makes me think of Jerry Springer black people. Sorry to POC's reading this.
WTF? What is Kirk, Superman? That guy twice his size just flew several meters backwards!
Pike! Oh yeah! Pike is DA MAN!
But Kirk... in my brain... still doesn't say "man". Fail fail fail.
Woah, Pike is really laying it on thick. He just neglects to mention that Jim can only have his own ship and stuff, if he learns to behave.
HOLY CRAP! That's a fast motorcycle...
Bones? With a "phobia"??? Uhm... weird. I've never heard it called that before. A severe dislike of space, sure. But a phobia? I've always seen it as a matter of stupidity for him, not fear. As in: "You'd be stupid to put yourself in that kind of danger willingly." Not the personal angle of phobias like: "I'm gonna die, die, die, OMGI'MGONNADIE!!"
But Karl Urban pulls McCoy off beautifully. And he does match Kirk's asshole behaviour nicely.
Nero's ship makes a weird screaming noise...
I don't like Nero's voice.
And I don't like that small space ship. It's too much Star Wars again.
Niiiice cadet uniforms, though.
Orion girl... weird.... I think it's the alien thing again...
And ew, Uhura is too freakin thin. And what's the deal with the inevitable underwear scene? Blerh.
Err... what exactly is Bones doing on the bridge? Shouldn't he be in sickbay? The whole "Doctor on the bridge" concept of Star Trek confuses me to no end. Not just in this movie, but as a general rule.
And they can say what they want, but that was fucking cheating, Jim. Hacking the test is not winning. They warped that situation badly. Instead of Kirk being a visionary who figured out a way to win a lose/lose scenario, they made him a proud ass who would rather fuck up the test than admit defeat or any kind of dent to his huge ego.
"Commander" Spock?! How much older than Jim IS he??
Their banter is gold, though. :o)
Ok, there's something very wrong with sending cadets into space to fight battles just like that. I find it beyond strange that they do it like: "Oh, a distress call from Vulcan? Let's send our cadets, shall we?" Not: "Let's call in some experts and go over our options and maybe then if it turns out we HAVE no other options, we can send them off." But the whole: "We have 'just' recieved this transmission from Vulcan..." makes it sound so very impulsive and not thought through at all. Fail.
What the hell? Uhura is totally the nagging girlfriend! Whoever decided that her character should be like that failed BIG TIME!! Not only that, Spock's rection here is also rather uncharacteristic. Not "This is a logical argument, you win." No, just: "You nag me. Ok, fine, you win. Go away." It's fail both in Spock's character and in the idea that they should be having a relationship.
Of course Bones would call it a favour to make Kirk sick as hell. I like it. :oP
Wooooow. Pweddy Starbase!
Oh boy... Bones really hates Spock. More than I ever got the impression he did in the series. And Kirk is slowly getting more... likable, kinda.
Sulu is awesome. :o) Weird seeing him as a rookie, though. I don't really think he deserved the "clown" moment.
More weird aliens.
Kirk is a bit of a whiner. But then again, that's kinda in character for him, isn't it?
Chekov's accent is... waaaay too much. And it totally doesn't fit his face. And he's even more of a clown than Sulu. More fitting, though, as the series did make fun of him occasionally.
Weird... those big, swollen hands make me think of the computer game Theme Hospital. Bloaty Head and Slack Tongue.
"I can fix that..." LOL, Bones. :oP
Nero's still got fat ears.
I like that Uhura is an expert. We don't get to hear that enough in the series. Finally a bit of a plus on her side.
Did that Romulan just talk in a British accent? Are ALL bad guys in American movies British??? Except Nero, who seems to be thickly American.
The inside of Nero's ship seems like a total ripoff of Shinzon's in Nemesis.
If the red matter was green, it would probably also be a bit of a ripoff of Nemesis.
Kirk a 1st officer and Spock a Captain? The weird continues.
Quinto nailed the raised eyebrow, though.
Space jump. The thought alone makes me wanna puke.
I like that space is dead silent. Very real.
That redshirt is gonna die. And he does... spectacularly, even.
Did Chekov just call Kirk: "kurk"??
Fold out sword?! Sulu saves the day! Hehe. Awesome. Cheesy, but awesome.
Weird fire vent is awefully convenient.
Of COURSE redshirt had the charges.
Did Spock just say: "I wanna know"?? Fail.
Chekov's only reaction to Vulcan and all it's people going down the drain? "oi oi oi...*sigh*" Fail.
There seems to be a lot of running through shiny white corridors, that remind me too much of the diplomatic vessel in Star Wars.
Woah, transporters have been revamped muchly. It's cool, but I'm not at all sure I like it.
Spock's mother still looks too bloody young.
She died... and why exactly is Kirk sad for him? Did he even know the woman was his mother?
"I am now a member of an endangered species." Aw... poor Spock.
Uhura and Spock as a couple still freaks me out.
And woah, Uhura is a demanding bitch. It's like she doesn't believe he loves her, unless he can reveal all his feelings to her. She obviously doesn't know him at all.
Mwahahaha. Pike is badass. I'm starting to think he's the best part of this movie. Nero might as well just kill him. He won't talk.
Nero's got a weird accent. It's distracting me, so he doesn't scare me as much as I'm sure he was supposed to.
Truth serum in bug form. Eeewwww. Bad idea to be eating while watching this.
Why would Spock care that Kirk is in his chair? And even if he did, he wouldn't say as much. He would just stare and raise his eyebrow until he moved.
Thank you for explaining the new timeline, Spock. I needed that.
Especially since tossing anyone off the ship is the most un-spock thing I've ever seen. WHAT THE FUCK!!??
O...k.... making a diary entry just to whine about Spock, while tramping though a blizzard? Uhm... right.
Ok... first there is a snow monster that looks WAAAY too much like the one in Star Wars, and then over to something that looks like a failed genetic experiemnt. Oh goodie. And a tiny stick with fire chases it off. Yeah.
Old Spock! YAY!!!
"Bullshit" ?? *shakes head*
"You are not the captain?" Oh LOL! Old Spock is just as confused as I am. :oD
Mindmeld! YAY! Now it's getting good!
Ok, so red matter = blach hole in a bottle.
Aaawwww... Nimoy, you are a genious. YOU made me cry over the demise of Vulcan! I love you.
Spock and McCoy moment! WOO!
"Are you out of your Vulcan mind?!" Hehe.
But the sarcasm really doesn't suit you, Spock.
Ok, the alien on the outpost is exactly like the ones on the planet in Nemesis, where they found B4.
Scotty! ROFL!! And he's quick!
This Scotty is not like the one in the series, but this guy does it in a completely endearing way! "I'd like to get my hands on her ample nacelles..." LOL!
O...k... Old Spock want Kirk to get young Spock to blow a fuse. Hmmmm. I'd like to see that. *leans closer to screen*
LOL! Scotty getting flushed! What the hell IS that water pipe, anyway? It's like the bottomless pits there are always on starships for no reason.
Turbines? For what? Not for power, I'm sure. Don't the spaceships run on dilithium crystals or something?
Did that guy just call Kirk... cupcake?
Ok, Kirk is just being stupid now. I suppose it could be his way of getting under Spock's skin, being deliberately dumb. I'm SURE a part of the Starfleet education includes info on federation species. He can't honestly think Spock has no feelings. Especially since Old Spock just told him that he certainly has. But I guess anything goes, as long as it works.
Ok, first of all, the sound effects of that fight would make old kung fu movies green with envy. Woah, too much.
Second, I don't find it all that credible that things would play out like that. But never mind. New timeline and shit. *sigh*
Ok, I'm kinda liking that Kirk could make Spock show feelings and Uhura couldn't. Hehe. Shippers arise!
Wow, that was great of Sarek to admit that he loved Spock's mother. Awesome.
Ok, Chekov's accent + techbabble = gibberish. I gave up. He's cute, but WAY over the top.
Also... 17??? And allowed on the bridge of a starship?? Jeez..
A glorious Spock moment here, where Kirk claps him on the shoulder and leaves. That look he sends him is very true to Nimoy's style. :o)
I would really like some sort of explanation to why Nero's ship is that style? It's certainly nothing like anything else was supposed to be in his timeline...
Hehe, sneaky Enterprise. I like it. She is indeed a beauty.
Did Sulu say: "Yes, sir?" don't they always say "aye"?
Ok, so now all of a sudden, Spock is a well of emotions with Uhura, too? That's cheesy.
What's with those phasers? They're... weird. It's like they're shooting bullets, not beams.
Mind meld on someone unconcious? Cool.
More running though white corridors.
But wow, Starfleet academy is awefully pretty, even under attack.
Nooooo.... not the "please tell my sweetheart that..." trademark emotion porn. Blah. And from Spock? *Groan.*
Another bottomless pit. *sigh*
And again, overrated combat sounds. *sigh*
The music here seems completely stolen from the newer Star Wars movies. *sigh*
This is getting ridiculous.
Is it just me, or does Nero's ship kinda look like a squid?
"Fire Everything!" Ok, Nero is officially stupid now. And a sorry excuse for a bad guy.
But as usual, Pike ROCKS!!
Ok, that medical scanner as a LOT more handy than they're candy-cane scanners. And weird.
Ok, black hole of dooooooom.
And now Kirk does it too? "Fire everything we've got!" It's... not clever.
And if I'm not entirely mistaken, some of the mechanics of a black hole makes it extremely unlikely that they would be within firing range of of the ship without being pulled in immediately. But I guess it was all to give Scotty his moment.
Ejecting warp cores. A classic. :o)
But damn it would only take them about 20 years to get home without warp cores. They must have been picked up by someone.
Oh wow! Old Spock and Young Spock meeting! Cooool!
And awesome how Old Spock teaches Young Spock a few things. :o)
LOL! "Since my customary farewell would appear oddly self serving, I shall simply say: Good luck." HILARIOUS!!
Woah, they're nicely glazing over a few things in Kirk's accomplishments. He managed those things, yes, but he was being an utter ass in the process.
Nice ending scene here. Everyone in their right place, doing their thing. :o)
And Old Spock ending the movie! AND THE THEME!!! YESSSSSS!!!!!!! Finally. I feared it would never come. :o) Ending this movie on a happy note is the only thing preventing me from leaving the screen in anger.

So... to recap:

Good Stuff:
PIKE! Everything about him was pure gold!
Starfleet Academy and the Enterprise are very pretty. The advantage of advanced special effects shows here.
Leonard Nimoy brilliant as usual. :o)
Uhura showing off her brains for once.
Karl Urban doing an excellent McCoy both in looks and acting.
Quinto looking amazingly like Spock should look.
Sulu! Though the fold out sword was a bit over the top. I wish there had been more focus on him.
Scotty. His lines weren't always spot on, but Simon Pegg did a wonderful job with what they gave him to work with.

Bad Stuff:
Nero is a real disappointment as a bad guy for lots of reasons too long to elaborate. I will if people want to hear more, though.
Nero's completely unreal super-duper ship.
Kirk. Basically, everything about him was awful. My personal opinion only, of course. But he makes me cringe.
Uhura looking like a walking eating disorder and showing no class what so ever.
The incredible overload of freaky aliens. Has there been some kind of alien tourism boom on Earth, or something? I know it's tempting with all the possibilities of modern movie making, but damn, it was too fucking much!
Everyone seeming to know what red matter is. It's like some sort of inside knowledge, not shared with the audience.
Chekov made into a clown and his accent too thick. The funny wore off after 30 seconds of straining to even understand him.
McCoy made out to have a phobia. Please, people... RESEARCH YOUR SHIT! PHOBAIS DON'T WORK LIKE THAT! Also, my husband pointed out that the Federation's most forward medical facility isn't actually on Earth, so it would suck for McKoy's education to never go off planet.
All the Star Wars ripoff. Blah.
Quinto actually disappointing somewhat in his acting. Can't quite put my finger on it, but many of his lines seem... off.
The music. It was blaringly loud, brain shattering and overblown. And only at the very end was there even a shred of the old theme.
Too much emotion porn in places. It gets cheesy REAL fast.
Wildly unrealistic sounds for the fight scenes. Kirk vs. Gorn would be better.
Uhura/Spock. That was just sad.
Spock's mother... she looked too bloody young. She's human and therefore she lives not nearly as long as her husband. And it should show. I would expect her to be in her 40's at the very least, but she doesn't look much older than a tired 25-year old. Considering all the makeup they had to play with, her's is just ridiculously understated. If it HAD to be Winona Ryder, they could easily have made her older looking. But noooo.
Lots of tech being revamped. And I'm not all that happy with it.

As a conclusion, I think I'll mimic [profile] mrs_picard and tell this movie to stay the fuck off my shelf. I usually want all parts of the series I'm a fan of, but this isn't worthy of a place amongst the giants. I think I'll just stay happily in denial about this new timeline.

I agree about Uhura/Spock. I went to see it with a group of friends, 3 of us were avid Trek fans and we all were shocked by that.
You have other good points. Now I want to see it again with your ideas in mind.
Basically I liked the movie, but maybe it was being with friends when I saw it.
So glad you are back.

Maybe in a movie theatre, the music wouldn't feel so brain shattering, and I would probably enjoy the effects more. The filming really was technically lovely. But I still wouldn't want to own it.

I admire you for actually sitting down and watching it. I couldn't do it without wanting to jump out of the window. The mere thought that we'll get more of this crap makes me SICK.

I liked, but not loved, Trek IX. You elaborated a lot of my issues with it. Every time Chekov opened his mouth, the friends I went with and I would just start laughing because we couldn't understand anything. I thought the spacejump was cool, but as soon as I figured out the redshirt wasn't Scotty (he hadn't been intro'd at that point and I knew he was in the movie), I knew he was going to bite it and I couldn't watch. The Spock/Uhura thing ... eh, I dunno. There's some eyebrow-raising stuff in TOS between them, and I heard somewhere that there was supposed to be a "thing" between Spock and Uhura in TOS, but that sort of got transferred to an unrequited "thing" between Spock and Chapel. But the "Tell Nyota ..." stuff was so UN-SPOCK. Quinto is hot as hell, though.

The new Kirk ... somehow, I felt the movie wasn't really all about HIM as it was about Spock!prime and the destruction of Vulcan. Kirk was just kinda there.

And Nimoy is a fucking God.

Truth: I will see the sequels, as I am a diehard, and most things Trek (with the exception of Voyager and Enterprise) thrill me. This was better, for me, than Nemesis, but not at all coming close to Wrath of Khan or Search For Spock, which are my top two fave ST movies.

I'll probably end up watching the sequels too, because I'm a masochist. And also, I'm ridiculously naïve and I keep hoping that they will get better. I'll probably be disappointed, but whatever. In any case I'm too damn curious. I want to know what people talk about when I'm cruising trek comms.

*bowing to the almighty Nimoy, for he is God.*

SPOCK, MESSIAH! (This joke will never get old.)

The sequels would probably suck, there isn't much plot to use after that. It would be like the 3rd Transformers movie.

Wow, you're opinion couldn't be more different than mine. I agree the movie has some fuck up moments, Spock/Uhura and the numerous aliens being prominent ones, but I consider this to be one of the best movies I've watched.
The new version of the main cast really annoyed me, mostly Spock. It's not like with Kirk, whose character wasn't all that overwhelming anyway, and I think overall the guy stayed in character, however annoyinly he did it, but QuintoSpock was just bad. He had huge Nimoy shoes to fill, and I didn't like him.
Pike was amazing, and Spock Prime was my favorite part of the movie, as to be expected of Nimoy.
As for the cupcake guy, it's the guy whom Kirk called cupcake in the Uhura in a bar scene. The fact that they had turbines there was weird, but the ship does need a water supply.
The music was amazing. If you'd taken the time to listen to the soundtrack alone, I'm sure you'll have a more positive view of it. It wasn't the Trekkiest, but then again, neither was this movie. The point wasn't to relive TOS.

The whole Nero part can be answered. There's a comic called Star Trek : Cowntdown, which is a prequel to this movie. The comic itself it great, and it explains everything very well (Not to mention it has Worf in it, and extra awesomeness), and I think the movie can't stand apart from it. It's really obscure without reading this.

The alien in the out post on Delta Vega was Reman, to the best of my knowledge, or erally looked like a Reman, and a movies today tend not to make the aliens look too different from one another if they aren't explicitly humanoid.

All that aside, I think this movie's greatest fuck up was during the Kobayashi Maru scene. They said "Klingon Warbirds". Not once, not twice, but three times! How can they make the same mistake three times! It may be an alternate universe, but I don't think the Klingons would switch ships with the Romulans! Call them Birds of Prey damn it!

I suppose if you like the countdown comics, then you'd like the movie. The only thing I really know about the countdown comics, is that B4 became Data... and that's when I decided not to read them. Data is dead, and he should remain so. I wouldn't mind seeing more of B4, but not overriding his personality completely, just to become a new Data. :o(

I guess if I could just but aside my knowledge of the earlier films, then I'm sure I would have liked it better.

But in general, I don't think I share popular opinions on Trek Movies. I thought Nemesis was awesome. And I seem to be one of a very small group of people when it comes to this.

Nemesis is the only movie I didn't watch yet, but I intend to, soon.

The new Data thing was weird, but since that's a very small part of the comic I didn't really mind it. It was still stranger to see Le Forge with eyes, no matter how many times I see it. I think these sacrifices were worth understanding the movie.

I just tried to seperate it from the earlier films, and it can't really ever be labelled as pure Trek for me, but I still like this movie. I still think The Voyage Home was the best, but I guess it has a lot to do with Spock cursing.

I'll go watch Nemesis as soon as I can, anyway.

Btw, the little dude on the outpost is not reman. Since I really like Nemesis, I know this. But here are links anyway.
Reman: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Reman
Little Dude: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Keenser

If you ask me he looks a little more like these guys: http://movies.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/nemesis/ch4/nemesis154.jpg

No wiki on them, sadly, but they are also from Nemesis.

I'm a lame person who didn't watch more than a couple of seasons of TNG, so the only Remans I've seen were on Cowntdown, and they looked really like that little rock dude. The art wasn't that great, but the backgrounds (and exploding stars) were awesome. They killed Worf though, and I cannot accept that he was killed by a freaking Romulan.

That movie really doesn't go into the canon, I just see it as more of a stand-alone piece in the Star Trek universe. It's like the mirror universe, only with Spock Prime.

All in all, the TNG movies weren't such a great part of the franchise, they ruined the Borg and made them Voyager-esque.

Oh my, Star Trek XI ...

Hm, after I had seen it I really liked it. It was funny and exciting and funny ... But then I realized that it fucked up the timeline completely. I'm telling you I was in shock for days until my cousin told me about alternate/parallel timelines, ... So I felt better. And I got into Kirk/Spock and I was happy.

But then I thought more and more about it. I was re-watching DS9 at that point and thinking more and more about Star Trek in general, and I realized that this film was as unlike Star Trek as possible.

Because I was in love with K/S I bought TOS and was in heaven. I always thought Kirk was this chauvinistic bastard but hey, suprise, he's far from it! And that's when I realized Star Trek XI had nothing to do with Star Trek! Not one single thing. There's just something missing! It was just another action/sci-fi film but not Star Trek.

So, like you, I don't consider it canon. For me Star Trek ended with Nemesis.
