Review of Merlin 2X8, Sins of the Father.

Ok, trying to contain my squee long enough for a review.
Oh, and lj-cut sucks big sweaty donkey balls.
We start off with Uther knighting some fellows. And woah, did he just pay Arthur a compliment??!! Be still, my heart! I really wished for a bit of a reaction from Arthur. Just a hint of anything, but he looks so stony. A tiny smile or swelling of his chest would have been perfect here. His father's acceptance is what he wants more than anything, after all.
Unknown person (but we all know it's Morgause) chops down Uther's trained knights with one blow. (!!) This would have really baked my noodle, had she not been magic and all. I mean, come on... ONE BLOW???
Lovely moment of throwing the gauntlet. And hehe, BIG surprise, it's a GIRL!
I snickered a bit over the fact that their main worry is that she's a woman, not that Arthur has been challenged. Over-confident much, guys?
Morgana feels like she knows Morgause. Well, their names are awfully similar.
Cut to Merlin mending Arthur's armor. For a minute I half expected him to be putting down the hammer, because he was waiting for Arthur to turn his back and then fix it with magic. But alas. No such fun. Instead it's a cute little conversation about cowardice and gentleman-like behaviour. And Arthur's cocky again. Merlin suggesting that she might be using her gender as an advantage makes Arthur downright prickly. But my shipping heart is flying from all the long looks exchanged. *siiiiiiigh* And Merlin even looks rather longingly at Arthur when he turns away. *siiiiigh*
Merlin taking a message to Morgause. LOL! He looks like he's about to crap himself when her sword is at his throat! Serves him right for not knocking and then sneaking around like that. I like Morgause, though. Very creepy.
That music when entering the battleground is very... executioner style. *shiver*
But awwwwww, Merlin! "Whatever happens, you are NOT to blame." I love you, Merlin. And if Arthur doesn't too, he's a moron.
Sword fight. Arthur letting the lady have a second go, because she's wounded. Idiot. Predictably, Morgause wins. Bradley's acting at the possible moment of death is wonderful. My heart swells for Arthur at his obvious fear, while still managing to die with honor. Can't blame him for making the promise, though.
On a sidenote, Morgause's very obvious mascara is annoying me.
Aw man... Uther has a look of extreme disappointment on his face as he leaves the battleground. *wail* Poor Arthur.
Sweet Merlin helping Arthur out of his armor is just so funny. One minute he's being supportive: "It could've been worse. ... You could be dead." And the next he's mocking Arthur: "Actually quite funny, when you think about it... or not." Hehehehehehehe.
Morgana entering Morgause's chambers. (Doesn't anyone knock in Camelot??) Woah she's got a beautiful dress in this episode!! I love that you can just hear Katie's accent. Lovely. "I hope you wil remember me fondly." Great actress. I really feel for her here.
Especially since next scene you see her in Morgana's room, casting a spell, making her sleep calmly. Aaawww. Morgana deserves a good sleep.
Arthur congratulating Morgause with her victory. Hehe. "You're a skillful swordsman-woman... swords... swordswoman."
She's making magic-eyes at the horse right in front of Arthur. Is Arthur blind or is she just that good? Arthur's look when Morgause mentions his mother is just wonderful! So... hungry!
Morgana sleeping until midday. Makes my heart happy. She's so tormented.
Uther's reaction to Arthur telling him about the next challenge is predictable. He's obviously terrified when Arthur mentions his mother and of course this makes Uther pull out the magic-card. Words of honor counts for nothing with magic users. He's... grounding Arthur? Even Arthur seems to think that's a bit weird. Arthur does seem a bit old for that.
*snicker* Merlin is practically prancing around the corner with that wicker basket. Considering how stressful his life usually is, he's awfully cheerful. He's on his way to see Arthur, of COURSE he's happy!
And oh, the banter. The love. "So I take it we're going anyway." "You're smarter than you look." And of course Merlin has to do everything, even come up with an escape plan. As usual, he makes it a lot harder than he has to. I'm sure he could have found rope somewhere else more easily than sneaking it up into this trousers (excuse me while I squee myself senseless) right in front of Gaius.
Arthur noticing Merlin looking fat. Aaaaawwwwwwww. And that look he gets when Merlin pulls up his shirt... I'm going to get really fangirly here and say that's the same look he gets when Merlin pulls up his shirt WITHOUT rope underneath! Hehehehehehehe!
I... I don't think I'll go into the whole escape plan much. My bullshit detector is going off wildly. I'm just gonna say that Arthur deserved that trip into the horsedung. It was his turn anyway. Merlin did it, the troll did it... time for the prince.
Shit, I'm going to rant about it anyway. Feel free to skip this paragraph.
1. Why doesn't Merlin tie the rope to something? Especially since Arthur is stupid enough to wear his chainmail, instead of having Merlin smuggle it out later.
2. Arthur doubts whether Merlin can hold him, and still he swings out like a chainmail wearing madman, instead of carefully lowering himself. *facepalm*
3. The rope isn't long enough. Of course it isn't, when 10 feet of it are hanging underneath Arthur. *sigh*
4. Merlin shouting that there is no more rope... are the guards deaf???
Now back to our regular broadcast...
Arthur seems a bit snappish on the way to Morgause. Understandable, I guess. Not knowing what awaits him and at the same time brooding a lot about his mother. Bummer that Merlin is the only one around so Arthur takes it out on him. I can't really blame Merlin for quietly snapping back.
Can I just say here how much I LOVE that not finding Merlin automatically means not finding Arthur. *squeeeeee*
And Merlin chatting while they ride. It's just so sweet on so many levels. "What if she challenges you to do anything even less honorable than breaking your word?" I bet Arthur just asks him to shut up, because he doesn't have an answer to that. Hehe.
Attacked in the woods. Odin's men? Whatever. But yay! Arthur protects Merlin! Snarks at him after, but rescues him, none the less. :oD Merlin still nattering about how strange it is to go to Morgause, but Arthur finally cuts him off with the information that she knows something about his mother. This must be the first Merlin hears of it, because it shuts him up nicely.
Sweet Morgana and Gaius moment. Gaius is being very kind, despite his unease. I'm glad to see this after the druid episode where he was such an ass about her dreams.
Campfire bonding scene. I swear, this one will forever be one of the most epic Merlin scenes, for both shippers and non-shippers alike. *sigh* This is the most honest and close they've ever been with each other. And frankly, I think it's clear that Merlin is the only one Arthur has ever talked to about this. Trust, people!! It's beautiful. And squee-worthy. Let's not forget the squee!
Gaius telling Uther about Morgause's bracelet and concluding that she must be Morgana's half sister. I'm kinda lost around this plot, but apparently, Gaius went against Uther's order and let Morgause live as an infant. Yet another notch upwards in my opinion of Gaius. :oD
Riding into the lake. That's just beautiful. Beautiful, beautiful scene. Sharp turn, and we're back to snarky banter. Hehe. "And what would you know about magic, Merlin?!" Epic line there!! Onwards into creepy courtyard with chopping block. And nice try Merlin, wanting to diffuse the tension with a joke. "Maybe the horse knows." Not working, though. Especially since Morgause chooses this moment to appear and be all creepy again. Very intense scene with the axe. Both Merlin and the rest of us are in shock. That's one hell of a test. Phew. Even though I knew very well that he wouldn't die, I was still holding my breath. *shudder*
Arthur's look when Morgause asks if he would like to see his mother simply breaks my heart. *shatter* Poor Merlin looks so suspicious.
Sir Leon... he still sounds awfully American. It kinda annoys me. But he's hot, so I forgive him. Uther on the other hand just seems like more and more of a bastard, not wanting Arthur to know anything about his mother. I hate him for that.
Back to Morgause and Arthur. The hungry look is back. And maybe it's the candles, but his eyes look so glazed over here. He's so open and vulnerable. Just listen to the way he answers Merlin so honestly.
"What if my father's attitude to magic is wrong?" Ok, this must be everything Merlin has ever dreamed of. No wonder his voice sounds so... breathless. He has never loved Arthur more, obviously. And the EYE SEX!! GUH!!
Ygraine is beautiful in an almost fairie-like way. I love it! And she's not dolled up like Morgause. :oD And Arthur is almost in tears. *sniffle* I'm totally crying along with him. Arthur thinking he was responsible for his mother's death. I can only blame Uther for that idea to planted in his head. :o( Damn you, Uther!!!
When Ygraine mentions Nimueh, I can see the cogs turning in Merlin's brain. A lot of things must suddenly be making sense to him.
"You were born of magic." I swear, Merlin looks positively in love here. It might be the idea of magic in Arthur or just my slash goggles going crazy. Either way... SQUEEEEEEEE!!!!!
"I can only imagine how it must feel to discover that your father is responsible for her death." Morgause is really rubbing it in here. But hey, she can do it for all I care. Uther is a prick.
But awwwww, Merlin! He's almost in tears for Arthur, here. *WAIL*
Top speed back to Camelot. Arthur grabbing his sword and storms into the castle. *gulp* Epic father-son battle about to happen, I wager.
Merlin confronting Gaius about the facts of Ygraine's death. And Gaius doesn't deny it. So if there was any doubt that it was true, they are gone now. I can hardly imagine how Merlin must feel about Uther.
Damn, slash goggles strike again in the middle of Merlin's angry bout with Gaius. Gaius didn't tell Merlin, because he was afraid that Arthur would find out. Not because he swore an oath to Uther, no.Because he was afraid Merlin would spill the beans in throes of passion. M'yes.
Arthur is totally giving uther the death glare, and that violent breathing through his nose is just making him seem that much more dangerous. And WOAH his voice is dripping death! Gawd, what a horrible moment for Arthur. Everything he stands for is brought into question by this knowledge. Horrible! *wails even more*
I just have to say that Anthony head is really giving it his best here. Fantastic acting! And Bradley too. Woah! Intense!!
"If you choose not to defend yourself... I will strike you down where you stand:" Fuck, Arthur sounds scary!! But Uther is fast! Jeez that was a quick parry! But I guess Arthur has learned a lot about swordfighting from Uther.
Shit, that face Arthur makes when his sword is at his father's throat... I want to screencap that to death!
Merlin begging Arthur not to kill Uther breaks my heart again and again and again. And when he claims it's all a lie... *WAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA* *blows nose*
Merlin really speaks to Arthur's heart. Everything he's ever believed in is confirmed... because Merlin says it. Not because Uther says it, or Gaius or even Morgause... but because MERLIN SAYS IT! *dies from heart-ache*
But I think he does have a point. I do think Morgause wants the kingdom to crumble. I do think Uther tells the truth as well. I do believe he loved Ygraine. I just think he was foolish enough to think he was above the rules of magic.
And Uther telling Arthur that he means more to him than anything. *sigh* Beautiful. He's still a prick, though.
Arthur sobbing how sorry he is breaks my heart again. Gawd. I'm gonna need major surgery.
And here they go, breaking my heart again. Oh boys. First Arthur says he's indebted to Merlin and then says that all magic is evil. And Merlin almost cries while still trying to grin. But Arthur can't even look at Merlin, so I'm not so sure he truly believes what he's saying. I think this whole episode has got him thinking. I'm hoping to see more of this, but I fear the coming episodes will show yet another step backwards for Arthur. I bet he's going straight back to pure royal prat in the next episode. *grumble*
Uther waiting for Merlin in Gaius' chambers. LOL! And aww, Merlin actually tries to show proper respect to the king, bowing a little and not meeting his eyes. An ally in the fight against magic... Merlin. *snicker* That's just precious. But wanting Merlin to protect Arthur? Aaaawwwwwwwww. He totally knows they're doing the naughty.
LOL! Gaius' face as he walks in is just... LOL!! "Was that Uther I saw just leaving?!" No, old man, it was Santa Claus...
But he redeems himself by being cheerful about the whole thing and bitching a little about Uther.
"Uther should be grateful. Your life would have been easier and safer if you had let him die." "Arthur wouldn't have been able to forgive himself if he'd gone through with it. It would have destroyed him." Merlin really IS willing to do ANYTHING for Arthur!! *sigh* Be still my shipping heart.
I'm not going to go into the promo for next episode. Instead I'll just end this by saying...
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE-FLAIL-GASP-fdkjfophfewngklgængklægnkmlægnsglæagnklægnklgænmglægrkghrjiogerjknnnnnnngggghhhh!!!!!!
That is all.

Date: 2009-11-18 10:49 am (UTC)Haha, you are too right. I love all the eyesex moments this episode, and how OBVIOUS Merlin's love for Arthur is, in every single scene. *super siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh*
LOL I couldn't help but die in a fit of laughter when Arthur put his foot in it with the swordsman/swordswoman bit. XDDD Oh Arthur, you're so precious. Especially when you don't take notice of magic HAPPENING RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. Dolt. *smiles fondly*
Oh don't worry dearest, the lowering of the rope scene was stupid beyond imagining. That's why I laughed so hard, because clearly everyone in that show and who makes that show, is retarded. XDD It makes me feel better about myself, somehow. XDD
Ohohohoh, and excuse me while I put this idea into my fic:
I LOVE that not finding Merlin automatically means not finding Arthur.
Bwahaha, and thank you for giving me more slash goggles food for thought. :)

Date: 2009-11-21 02:55 pm (UTC)but, still, this episode was epic, the last merlin/arthur scene was the most lovely and painful scene to me, I so wanted to hug merlin and yell all the truth to arthur!
