Monday I called and made an appointment with the vet, to have my last 2 rats put to sleep. Scotty was old as it was, and was getting really weak and sick. Manny was a few months younger, but also quite old. Plus, he was a weird little guy, so finding him a new home or keeping him alone was just not an option.

Again. Well, it's always fun. :o)

Reply to this meme by yelling "words!", and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your journal and explain what they mean to you. Keep in mind that if I don't know you that well, your words might end up kind of esoteric/oblique.

[livejournal.com profile] birggitt gave me these 5 words:
Pet Rats
Pea
Batman
Sci-fi
Mythbusters.

So. Onwards!

Today I went to the vet with yet another of my rats and this time I had to leave without her. Not entirely unexpectedly, the vet said we could "try" to treat her massive lung infection and abcess, but the chances of beating such a major infection were slim. I agreed that she had been put through enough, having had another abcess drained not 2 months ago and now having lost so much weight due to an even larger infection. So Cookie was put to sleep way too early and I now have a completely empty cage in my living room. It's so empty it's practically screaming of loss. :o(

Cookie was a really lovely girl who was gentle and sweet with everybody. Never nipped the tip of the fingers giving her treats and would spend hours on any shoulder offered to her. She will be missed.

Sleep tight sweetie. :o(

Yesterday I had the sad experience of losing one of my rattie girls quite suddenly. The really crappy thing about rats is that their survival instinct is so great even after hundreds of generations of domestication, that they show virtually no signs of illness until it's way too late.

So when I looked in the cage the day I came home from the hospital with Green Pea, Faye was looking healthy and happy. The following morning, I found her sick and dying. Since it's the weekend, there was nothing to do. Nowhere to go for help or even a humane termination. All I could do was watch as she drew in her last painful breaths. :'o(

She was a sweet, active girl, who never sat still for a moment. Which proved itself as I realized I have practically no pictures of her. So now her sister is alone until I can neuter our last 'equipped' male, and I miss her. She made sure life was never dull.

Goodnight my sweet Faye. I'll see you again at the Rainbow Bridge.

Here she is, 7 weeks old. The only picture I could find of her.

Through the years I've had many many pet rats, and some of them have had some really amusing pictures taken of them. So just because I was feeling nostalgic and silly, I decided to 'LOLrat' some of the best snapshots. I have loads more, but I think I'll settle for this first batch just now. Sadly, none of these clowns are amongst the living anymore, but what better way to remember them than with a smile?
Cut for extremely huge picspam! )
