ladydrace: (Do they have a name for what's wrong wit)
I think I got a taste today of how it feels to be an alien. And I don't mean that in a bad way, necessarily. Mostly just complex.

See, I've only known about my autism for a little under two years now, but I've always known there was something "off" about me, compared to others. But it has never been seen as a good thing. Only always being cause for scorn or ridicule.

But lately I've been seeing a... well an expert of a sort, in regards to autism and such. And today while I was explaining some of the ways I viewed people around me, she got really excited and happy, because she'd never heard it put quite like that before. She made notes furiously, and when I joked that maybe I should just write a book about it, she got downright giddy and told me she'd definitely buy it.

And because I'm forever and always a shipper first, this made me think of Garak and Bashir. Because all else aside, how flattering must it have been for Garak to talk to someone like Bashir? Someone who finds him fascinating and awesome, even if mostly because of how different he is to humans, and a little less because of who he actually is? When all Garak knows is suspicion from most of his fellow Cardassians, and outright hatred from Bajorans.

See, I can relate to that. Because I get so little enthusiasm in regards to who I am. Pretty much the only affirmation I get is when I produce something (writing) or do favors for someone (like do stuff for my mom). I think the only one who seems to love me pretty much for no reason is my son.

So I relate to Garak in that way at least. (Not so much the genocide and intense patriotism, but still.) And it's a high. I'm not gonna mince words here, it IS a high. To sit across from someone who is literally hungry for you to tell them more. Who looks at you with stars in their eyes and a million questions. Even though you know it's not YOU they're excited about, exactly. It doesn't matter. It's still a high.

So bottom line. Anyone who tries to tell me that Garak would never be with Bashir because he's young/dumb/annoying or it's risky/out of character(snrrk)/seems stupid for someone as clever as him? Anyone who tries that with me has obviously never been aching for their next high. And Garak? Is an addict. It's canon. And this level of attention, no matter how problematic? Is just too damn tempting.

Back in the day when I discovered DS9 and the joys of Garak/Bashir, I managed to find and read pretty much every fic still available on the web in just about a year's time. Of course, every now and then something would crop up that I somehow missed, or someone would write something new, but it was pretty rare with months in between.

So I got it in my head that I would be able to gather sort of an archive of Garak/Bashir fics. Just links, making it easier to look for and share fics with my fellow Garak/Bashir fans.

Had things stayed like they were then, I might have been able to pull it off, but several factors have now finally forced me to admit that it was a way too ambitious project for me.

First of all, I should have been self-aware enough to realize that other fandoms would arrive and take some of my time. I'm still a major Garak/Bashir fan, and I could probably singlehandedly run a G/B ficfinder blog if anyone actually needed something like that. But most of my energy lies elsewhere these days, both in my personal life and in other fandoms.

And then of course there's the glorious fact that Garak/Bashir isn't nearly as dead as I'd thought. New fics seem to be written almost weekly these days, and while that makes me very happy, it also means that my hopes of keeping up with the influx of new fics (and the constant changing of links and closing of pages in the internet) pretty much impossible.

So I've decided to give up on my garakbashirfics comms on livejournal and dreamwidth.

I'm going to leave them open for a while, in case someone wants to take over the projects, but I doubt it. Instead, I think I will make it a sticky post on my journal (and maybe even on the garakbashirfics too) that anyone interested can have my entire folder of saved fics sent to them. I try to save pretty much every G/B fic I've ever read, so while the search option will have to be abandoned, the material is still available.

As he was leaving, Miles turned in the doorway. “Julian, do me a favor.”

“Yes?”

“Never ask me to fix your replicator again. Get one of the junior engineers, or have Jadzia do it for all I care. Just... don't call me about it ever again, all right?”

“Uh... sure.”

“It's just... there are limits to what I want to know about my friends' late night replicating history. Understand?” He smiled tightly, and then stomped down the corridor before Julian could come up with a reply of more than: “huh?”

Then he connected the dots. “Garak!”

End.

“Do I really have to join you?”

“The invitation said plus one, and no matter how we look at it, you're now my significant other,” Julian said calmly, ignoring Garak's pouting.

“I wouldn't mind if you invited someone else. Truly I wouldn't.”

“You're going, and that's final.” Julian fiddled with his tie until Garak stepped closer to adjust it for him.

“You know they're all going to give us those dirty looks. Again.”

“Don't worry, Elim. I'll protect you from the scary diplomats,” Julian smirked.

Garak glared. “Cute.”

“I thought it was.”

“What is wrong with this thing?” Julian grumbled, punching the buttons on the replicator with more force than strictly necessary.

“Did you clear the buffer?” Garak asked mildly without looking up from his novel.

“Yes, I cleared the damn buffer. It just. Won't. Work. Right.”

Garak sighed and got up from the couch. He reached past Julian, pushed three buttons, and with an accommodating bleep the dirty dishes disappeared from the compartment like they should.

“I hate you,” Julian muttered, his arms crossed over his chest.

“I know,” Garak replied smugly and sat back down.

This WIP is old. Old as balls. Not even kidding. I started it back in 2008 and somewhere in the middle of 2009 it kinda dried up. I've been poking at it lately, because really, all it needs is the grunt work of typing it up. I have the plot laid out on my head. I just need to grit my teeth and goddamn get to it, already. Also, it'll probably end up being at least 20k words. God help me.

Notes:
It's a post-series story, set roughly 25 years after WYLB. Garak had (foolishly perhaps) decided that not keeping in touch with Bashir was best for all of them, and while he regrets this decision somewhat, he's lost as to how to change things. Meanwhile Bashir went back to Earth, got married, had a son and started teaching at the Academy. His wife later died, but Bashir still stayed, mostly for the sake of his mother and later his father when he ended up a widower. He tried contacting Garak repeatedly, even though he never got any reply. Garak kept up to date with Bashir's life, but is still taken utterly by surprise when suddenly one day, Bashir's son turns up on Cardassia Prime, falling practically right in Garak's lap. Thus begins a new era of Garak's life, once again a Bashir being the one bright spot in Garak's gloomy existence.

But from what the son has to tell, it looks like maybe Garak is going to have a second chance to make things right with the father.

Right, so I thought it was time to finally tackle this beast! There is so much good stuff out there and I'll probably overlook a lot of things, but my trip through links today reminded me of some of the amazing fics out there and I really want to let the world know which of these I love the best and why. So here we go! In no particular order, my personal faves!

30-ish recs under here! )

ladydrace: (Garak and Bashir Cuddle)
Due to a request on Tumblr for fluffly G/B fics, I thought I'd throw together a little list of links. Note: I am totally using my own discretion here, not going by labels. If I think the fic is cute, it's on the list.

Under a cut, because there are LOADS! )
